Kei Truck FAQ — Canada

Common questions from Canadian buyers, answered.

Are kei trucks legal to drive on highways in Canada?

Yes, in most provinces. Kei trucks are registered as light trucks and can drive on highways. Some provinces have restrictions on certain limited-access highways — check your local MVA regulations. They are NOT recommended for sustained high-speed highway driving given their 660cc engines.

Is right-hand drive (RHD) legal in Canada?

Yes. RHD vehicles are legal in all Canadian provinces. Most drivers adapt within a few days. Overtaking requires extra caution — give yourself more time and space to see past oncoming traffic.

What is the fuel economy of a kei truck?

Typically 7–10 L/100km for city driving, 5–8 L/100km on the highway. The 660cc engines are very fuel-efficient by truck standards. Expect to spend roughly half as much on fuel as a full-size truck.

What is the payload capacity?

Typically 350–500 kg (770–1,100 lbs) for a standard kei truck. More than enough for farm hauling, landscaping, or light construction. Dump bed models are designed for frequent loading/unloading cycles.

Are parts available in Canada?

Yes — through dealers like us, online suppliers (RockAuto, Japan Parts, specific kei truck suppliers), and eBay. The most common models (Sambar, Hijet, Carry) have excellent parts availability. We stock key consumables at our Calgary location.

What does OOPI stand for and do I need one?

OOPI stands for Out-of-Province Inspection — a provincial safety inspection required when registering a vehicle from another province or imported from outside Canada. We complete this for you before delivery. You'll have 2 weeks to register the truck after receiving it.

How does Canada-wide shipping work?

We ship via Canadian rail (CP/CN freight). Your truck is loaded onto a carrier at a Calgary terminal and transported to the nearest rail terminal in your city. You pick it up there. Transit times vary: ~2–3 days to Saskatchewan, ~5–7 days to Ontario, ~7–10 days to Atlantic Canada.

Can I drive a kei truck in Quebec?

No. Quebec's SAAQ requires vehicles to meet emissions standards that most kei trucks (built before 2009) cannot meet. All other provinces are fine.
