Everything you need to know before buying a kei truck in Canada.
What is a Kei Truck?
A kei truck (軽トラック, kei torakku) is a Japanese mini truck built under Japan's "kei" vehicle regulations — strict limits on engine size, dimensions, and weight. The result is an incredibly compact, fuel-efficient, and surprisingly capable vehicle that dominated Japan's agricultural and commercial sectors for decades.
Common models include the Subaru Sambar, Daihatsu Hijet, Suzuki Carry, Honda Acty, and Mitsubishi Minicab. Most feature 660cc 3-cylinder engines, 4WD with low range, and a flat-deck or dump bed configuration.
The 15-Year Import Rule
Canada allows the importation of vehicles that are at least 15 years old under the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program. This is why you'll typically find kei trucks from 2001–2010 available — they've cleared the 15-year threshold and can be legally registered in Canada.
Key Point
Trucks must be at least 15 years old as of the import date. In 2025, trucks manufactured in 2010 or earlier are eligible. The eligible year advances by one each January.

Provincial Registration
Kei trucks are road legal in all Canadian provinces except Quebec, which has additional emissions testing requirements that these older vehicles typically can't meet.

Insurance
Kei trucks can be insured in Canada, but not all insurers are familiar with them. Best approach:
- ✓Contact your existing insurer first — many will cover kei trucks as a 'light truck'
- ✓Hagerty, Intact, and some brokers specializing in imported vehicles are good options
- ✓Expect to register it as a truck (not a car) — insurance premiums are typically lower
- ✓Keep a copy of the OOPI and registration documents readily available
Choosing the Right Model
Subaru Sambar
Best for: Daily driver, farm/acreage
Supercharged variants offer excellent power. Most comfortable ride.
Daihatsu Hijet
Best for: Work truck, Jumbo cab users
Jumbo cab great for taller drivers. Dump bed models excellent for farming.
Suzuki Carry
Best for: Lightweight, utility, farm
Lightest of the group. DA63T is most common and well-supported.
Honda Acty
Best for: Off-road, traction
Mid-engine layout gives excellent weight distribution. Great 4WD traction.
